Membership
Membership includes 16 residents of the State of Minnesota appointed by the Governor to four year terms.  11 members must be Minnesota licensed physicians, at least one holding the degree of doctor of medicine and one holding the degree of doctor of osteopathy; and five public members as defined by section 214.02 of Minnesota statutes. Members shall not serve more than eight years, consecutively.  All eight congressional districts must be represented by physician appointees and five congressional districts must be represented by public appointees.

Entity Powers and Duties, Activity Summary

The board licenses and registers physicians, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, acupuncturists, athletic trainers, genetic counselors, naturopathic doctors, and traditional midwives; and enforces the relevant practice acts.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY

Over 26,000 physicians are licensed by the Board of Medical Practice.  The Board also licenses or registers physician assistants, respiratory therapists, acupuncturists, athletic trainers, genetic counselors, naturopathic doctors, traditional midwives, and professional corporations. The Board's mission is to protect the public by extending the privilege to practice to qualified applicants, and by investigating complaints relating to the competency or behavior of individual licensees or registrants.

Meeting Information
Meetings typically last: Full day committee meetings; full day business meetings; ad hoc conference calls and special meetings.
Meeting Frequency: Monthly committee meetings; bi-monthly business meetings; ad hoc and special meetings. Time commitment expected is a minimum of one business day and one Saturday per month, plus preparation time.

Meetings are held at:
Conference Room A, 2829 University Ave SE, Minneapolis; Board of Medical Practice 5th floor conference room; ad hoc locations with notice posted. Some travel required for off-site meetings. Some options for virtual attendance.
