Entity Powers and Duties, Activity Summary
The board is responsible for architecture, urban design, and comprehensive land-use planning in the capitol area of St. Paul; exercises zoning and design review authority; and overseas redevelopment of the north Capitol area.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY

Policy making, design review of projects in the Capitol Area, and Capital Budget requests for the Capitol Building are the primary duties of the Board. It must prescribe the conditions under which services will be provided, as well as the basic policies for the entire operation of the agency. The Board establishes zoning and design rules, and grants zoning permits within a 60 block area around the Capitol Building. In 2010, the Board has amended its comprehensive plan and rewritten its zoning rules and design guidelines for the area. Recently completed on the Capitol Mall is the Memorial to Special Forces in Laos and Phase II of the MN Workers Memorial, which added additional inscriptions and a new stone mural depicting MN workers and scenes. The Board continues to be involved in review and master planning of development in the area, the Capitol Building restoration and  are-write of the Comprehensive Plan for the MN State Capitol Area.
