Membership

The Task Force shall consist of not less than ten (10) and not more than fifteen (15) voting members, all serving a concurrent two year term. It is preferred, but not required that at least eight (8) members work and live in counties outside the seven-county twin-cities metropolitan area. Members, or their families, may not be employees of the DPS or its divisions. Members will include teen drivers, community members at-large, representatives from Minnesota driver education, law enforcement, and other organizations, agencies, or business with interest or responsibilities to address teen driver safety issues, with these conditions:

a) No more than 2 teen drivers

b) No more than 2 representing Commercial Driving  Schools

c) No more than 2 representing Public/Community Education Driver Education Programs

d) No more than 2 representing Law Enforcement

e) No more than 3 from community at-large

f) No more than 4 representing non-profit organizations, business, or other entities dedicated to reducing crashes, injuries and deaths involving teen drivers, excluding those listed in a, b, c, d, or e above.

Entity Powers and Duties, Activity Summary

The Teen Driver Safety Commissioner's Advisory Task Force will advise and provide input to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) on teen driver issues with the goal of reducing crashes, injuries, and deaths involving teen drivers. The task force will identify the strengths and needs of teen driver safety programs and initiatives, and recommended strategies to enhance them. The task force will focus on three areas:

1. Novice drive education and parental awareness programs

2. Driver licensing, including graduated driver's license laws and testing

3. Other initiatives designed to reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths involving teen drivers.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY

First meeting was held June 11, 2020.

Additional meetings held: September 10, 2020, January 14, March 18, June 17, 2021

Next meeting scheduled August 12, 2021

Provided feedback to DPS Commissioner regarding legislative proposals for on-line driver education and third-party driver license testing.
