To encourage the development of the best possible fire education, protection, and prevention services for Minnesotans and improve the coordination, quantity, and quality of these services.
To disseminate information to the governor, Legislature, and public regarding fire and life safety issues affecting Minnesota citizens and firefighters who protect them.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) will provide staffing and administrative support to the Council.
DPS, on behalf of the Council, will serve as Minnesota's principal liaison to the United States Fire Administration for purposes of:
a. Applying for and receiving of federal funds issued by the United States Fire Administration,
b. Facilitating communication with that agency.
The Council, in performing its duties, will receive assistance from state agencies, as appropriate.

GCOFPC has written white papers regarding the state of fire protection existing in homes and businesses in the state. It has encouraged member organizations to work on remedies to reduce fire deaths. For example, smoke detectors are now required in every home in MN.
